RESEÑA | “Succession” encuentra el humor negro tras shock del episodio anterior

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:30:00 GMT

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police arrested a Chinese national on blasphemy charges after he allegedly insulted Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, authorities said Monday. Under Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws, the offense carries the death penalty. Police identified the man only as Mr. Tian from China and said he was arrested on Sunday night, hours after hundreds of residents and laborers working on a dam project blocked a key highway and rallied to demand his arrest. The rally took place in the town of Komela in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan, according to local police chief Naseer Khan.Khan said officers quickly responded to the protests by rescuing and arresting the Chinese national. “We are still investigating,” Khan said. The blocked highway later reopened to traffic and work resumed at the Dasu Dam, which has scores of Chinese and hundreds of Pakistanis working on the project, Khan said.Mob attacks on people accused of blasphemy and even ly...

Saudi-led coalition releases additional Yemen war prisoners

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:30:00 GMT

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A Saudi-led military coalition on Monday started freeing 104 more prisoners captured in Yemen’s war, a unilateral release that followed an organized prisoner swap amid renewed diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it flew 48 detainees from Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport heading to Sanaa, Yemen’s capital that has been held for years by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. More flights with prisoners were planned for later on Monday. A statement from Brig. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, acknowledged the release of 104 Houthi detainees.A U.N.-brokered deal saw the release of over 700 detained Houthis, and more than 180 other prisoners, including Saudi and Sudanese troops fighting with the Saudi-led coalition. That three-day operation was overseen by the Red Cross and ended on Sunday. The prisoner releases come as the Houthis and Saudi Arabia s...

BEIRUT (AP) — A helicopter raid by U.S. forces in northern Syria early on Monday resulted in the “probable death” of a senior leader of the militant Islamic State group, the U.S. military said. The U.S. Central Command said in a statement that the IS leader, who was not named, was “responsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe.” Two other “armed individuals” were killed along with the target of the raid, CENTCOM said. The statement said no civilians or U.S. troops were hurt in the operation.Syria’s White Helmets, a civil defense group operating in opposition-held areas of northern Syria, said it transported two people wounded during the raid to a local hospital, which later said they had died. A third person was killed when the U.S. forces landed for the raid, the White Helmets said. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which partners with the U.S. in anti-IS operations in northeast Syria, said that the operation was launched from a base near the to...

OTTAWA — Canada’s largest federal public service union is expected to reveal what came of last-ditch talks over the weekend after threatening the largest strike against a single employer in Canada’s history. Mediated contract negotiations between the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Treasury Board continued over the weekend in what the union described as the government’s final chance to reach a deal.“This is the government’s last opportunity to show workers the respect they deserve. Amid high phone bills, telecom experts call for structural change, regulatory reform

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:30:00 GMT

TORONTO — Whether you’re catching a flight, opening a new bank account or picking up groceries, a small group of big names takes up most of the market share. Competition Ltd. is a Canadian Press series that explores what this means for products — and prices — in the country.———Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne says Canadians from coast to coast are united inone message to telecom providers.“We pay way too much for telecom services and we want more options, full stop,” the minister declared on March 31 as he waved through the final approval for Rogers Communications Ltd.’s takeover of Shaw Communications Inc.Ottawa’s rubber-stamp was punctuated by his decree that the merger — through a side-deal selling Shaw’s Freedom Mobile to Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron — would establish a viable fourth player to spur competition in the market and offer Canadians a cheaper alternative to the major companies.Other recent developments have prompted renewed attention toward competition...

Internal audit raises red flags over maintenance of graves, cemeteries for veterans

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:30:00 GMT

OTTAWA — An internal report by Veterans Affairs Canada is raising red flags over the country’s military graves and cemeteries, warning that more permanent funding is needed to keep them from falling into disrepair. The report is the result of an internal audit following up on a similar review six years ago. At that time, nearly 45,000 out of the estimated 207,000 graves of Canada’s veterans were in a state of disrepair because of a lack of resources. The Trudeau government subsequently committed nearly $25 million over five years in temporary funding starting in 2018, which the new report says has largely addressed the problem by facilitating thousands of repairs.Yet auditors found that without a permanent increase to the department’s funding, that success will be short-lived.“While five-year funding for the backlog project has allowed the grave marker maintenance team to reduce the backlog of repairs significantly, maintaining an adequate inspection cycle post...

Alberta regulator reconsiders Fort Hills oilsands approval after critical report

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 06:30:00 GMT

EDMONTON — Alberta’s energy regulator is reconsidering a project it approved months ago after receiving a critical report on Fort Hills Energy’s plan to mine oilsands from a unique carbon-storing wetland. In September, the Alberta Energy Regulator approved plans to mine a portion of the McClelland Lake Wetland Complex — a large and intact wetland once considered for environmental protection that lies partly within the company’s lease. The approval came after a two-decade regulatory history and the submission by Fort Hills of plans saying it could mine about half the wetland without affecting the remainder. But in March, the Alberta Wilderness Association presented the regulator with an independent scientific analysis of the company’s plan that found significant shortfalls. It asked the regulator to revisit its decision.“We note that you have requested a reconsideration,” said the regulator’s April 12 response. “This request will be proc...
