4 new and under-the-radar spots for dumplings, noodles and ramen

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

When Xiaolong Hao first moved from Los Angeles to Denver more than 10 years ago, he took notice of the “Welcome to Colorful Colorado” sign at the state border. It’s partly what gave him the idea for the colorful soup dumplings he now serves at Bryan’s Dumpling House. Each of the eight colors represents a different style of regional cuisine in his native China and each has its own flavor. “This is more about Chinese food culture,” Hao said in an email to The Denver Post. “I want to let people know more about [it] by having real Chinese food.”So the soup dumplings at Bryan’s, which Hao opened with his wife, Carina Wang, in March (and is named for their son), are just the beginning. The menu also includes mapo tofu; Szechuan-style dan dan noodles with peanuts, scallions and pork; stir-fried shredded pork loin in black bean sauce; as well as regular dumplings in chili oil, shu mai and barbecue pork buns.Xiao Long Bao (8 regional flavo...

RTD cancels purchase of 17 electric buses it doesn’t have space to maintain — and orders fleet transition strategy

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

Metro Denver’s transit agency pulled the trigger in late 2021 on what its leaders hoped would be the first of many moves to replace the more than 1,000 diesel buses on its regular routes with zero-emission vehicles. But the Regional Transportation District’s leaders found themselves Tuesday in the awkward position of canceling an $18 million deal for 17 new electric-powered buses — even as they reaffirmed their goal of converting the entire fleet in coming decades. The reason: RTD’s maintenance and operations facilities lacked enough space to charge, maintain and store those new buses and their specialized equipment. That was something discovered after the contract was signed with New America Flyer, said Debra Johnson, RTD’s general manager and CEO.Agency officials estimated it would cost roughly $85 million to construct a new building at one of its maintenance facilities, one that would hardly accommodate RTD’s future needs as it buys more electric...

Colorado’s big snowpack powers massive “pulse” of water being shot through Grand Canyon

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

A huge amount of the water that flows down from Colorado’s snowy mountains into the West’s depleted Lake Powell reservoir is rocketing out of pipes this week to power a massive, simulated flood through the Grand Canyon — the first one in five years to try to revitalize canyon ecosystems the way nature once did.Federal operators of the Glen Canyon Dam atop the Grand Canyon opened jets to begin this surge before sunrise Monday, sending what they described as “a pulse” of water whooshing through the Colorado River as it curves through the base of the canyon.U.S. Bureau of Reclamation officials said they’ll maintain the surge until Thursday evening, ensuring a flow for 72 hours at 39,500 cubic feet per second of water. This “High Flow Experiment” will require 270,000 acre-feet of water, federal officials said — enough to sustain more than half a million households for a year. By comparison, Denver Water typically captures 290,000 acre-feet of wat...

Grass is looking greener for Alameda golf course with upgrade from world-class architect

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

Alameda’s 333-acre public golf complex, Corica Park, will soon undergo renovations by an industry-renowned master architect.Construction on the North Course is expected to start in June by Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects, which has created 280 courses in 48 countries, on every continent but Antarctica. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and his design company have been lauded by golf industry leaders as among the most respected experts in the world. In a peculiar twist, Corica Park’s South Course, which was awarded “best municipal course renovation” and recently named one of America’s best city-owned greens, was given a facelift in 2018 by architect Rees Jones — Robert’s brother. The news marks a “serendipitous first” in the world of golf, according to Avani and Umesh Patel, who operate the complex; Corica Park will be the only location in the world where the Joneses will have their work on display on side-by-side municipal golf courses, a...

49ers mailbag: How do you measure heart in the NFL Draft? And, of course, more Lance trade queries

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers don’t own a draft pick until No. 99 under Friday night’s lights, but that doesn’t mean we can ignore the 88th annual player selection meeting. It’s a rite of passage to renew hope — and to restart our mailbag via questions from Instagram and  Twitter:Is there a level to rate a prospect’s “Love of the game?” (@mattyb4949)If so, the draft would not be such an inexact science. Linebacker Fred Warner, a 2018 third-rounder and now two-time All-Pro, said it best Monday: “I would never want to be a GM or a college scout. Because I don’t get how you can hand-pick these cats out of all these different schools all over the country, and you’re saying this guy is going to turn into something. It’s all projections. You don’t really know until they come here and you try to develop them.“… You want to just talk to a kid face-to-face. You write up these reports about him and you watch him on tape. You want to know, ...

Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins flipped from MIA to playoff-mode without a hitch

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Sometime in the middle of Game 3 at Chase Center, Steve Kerr pulled Andrew Wiggins aside to put the game into a different perspective.“Okay,” Kerr said. “This is like Opening Night for you.”Lost in the ejections, suspensions and missed buzzer-beaters that have defined the very first Battle for Northern California is the uncertainty that surrounded Wiggins heading into this first-round series. The 28-year-old’s first NBA game action since Feb. 13 was the Warriors’ Game 1 loss in Sacramento following his mysterious 50-day absence.Underlying an unprecedented situation was a harsh reality that Wiggins — one of Golden State’s most important players in last year’s title run — might not be physically ready to help get his team into the next round. Rave reviews from teammates on how Wiggins looked in practice and scrimmages leading up to the playoffs were the only hints for how he’d recover from the subs...

Niles: Is this the first in a new wave of theme park failures?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:14 GMT

Is a Dubai theme park’s closure this month a one-off, or the first sign of a new round of failures in the global attractions industry?Dubai Parks and Resorts this month announced the permanent closure of Bollywood Parks Dubai, one of the three parks that opened at that resort in late 2016. Themed to the Hindi film industry based in Mumbai, Bollywood Parks offered wonderful decorative touches, as well as a fun live-action stunt show and media-based motion-base and flying theater shows, with a new GCI wooden coaster seemingly ready to open soon.RLATED: 10 fascinating theme parks that have closed foreverAt first glance, Dubai ought to be a prime market for theme park development. UK-based research company Euromonitor ranked Dubai as the second-most visited city in the world last year, trailing only Paris. On paper, Bollywood also looks like a can’t-miss theme for a park. Movies long have provided the most compelling IP for themed attractions, and Bollywood films are wildly popular arou...
