Israel passes law protecting Netanyahu as protests continue

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 21:58:53 GMT

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel’s parliament on Thursday passed the first of several laws that make up its contentious judicial overhaul as protesters opposing the changes staged another day of demonstrations aimed at ringing an alarm over what they see as the country’s descent toward autocracy.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition approved legislation that would protect the Israeli leader from being deemed unfit to rule over his corruption trial and claims of a conflict of interest surrounding his involvement in the legal changes. Critics say the law is tailor-made for Netanyahu, encourages corruption and deepens a gaping chasm between Israelis over the judicial overhaul. The legal changes have split the nation between those who see the new policies as stripping Israel of its democratic ideals and those who think the country has been overrun by a liberal judiciary. The government’s plan has plunged the nearly 75-year-old nation into one of its worst do...

Miss Manners: How can I make them stop being rude about my employee’s hair?

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 21:58:53 GMT

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am the manager of a gift store where my clientele mostly ranges from 40 to 70 years old. I have an employee in her early 20s who is sweet, super helpful and professionally courteous — everything you’d want in a worker. She has her own unique style, and changes her hair with fun colors or highlights; right now it’s a very pretty shade of light green.Several customers have made inappropriate comments to her about it, including laughing. One woman pointed at my employee, saying to her daughter, “See? I told you she had green hair. Isn’t that nuts?”My employee takes it in stride, smiling through it all, but I feel terrible. I’ve wanted to say something to these customers, but I don’t want to lose their business. Nor can I afford to lose my employee.I’m not sure what I can say to get them to stop being so rude to a human being in public.Related ArticlesAdvice | Miss Manners: Should I call people to expla...

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 21:58:53 GMT

PARIS — The EU has robust banking safeguards in place to protect its lenders against the prospect of a new crisis, the European Commission’s economic chief said Thursday, adding that additional rules are also around the corner.“From a supervisory point of view, we are not in a vacuum,” Paolo Gentiloni said at POLITICO’s Finance Summit after UBS bailed out its Swiss rival Credit Suisse, raising fears that a crisis born in the U.S. was spreading to Europe. “We are, I think, supervising our banking system in a very effective way.”But improvements can still be made. EU legislators have been unable to agree on a shared deposit insurance system to back up national cash pots.
