When Samantha Boateng’s mom came back from a trip to Ghana in 2014 and said the students there wanted books, she sprang into action.A student at Gar-Field High School in Prince William County, Virginia at the time, Boateng contacted the school’s student council to see if they would help coordinate book drives. They launched a few and eventually collected 600 books.Boateng then realized they couldn’t fit all those books in a suitcase. So they kept collecting and planned to coordinate how they’d get to Ghana afterward.Within the year, Boateng oversaw the collection of over 20,000 books. What started as a book drive turned into a nonprofit called Read 2 Lead, which Boateng said launched with the purpose of providing books to students in Ghana and expanded to help build three libraries there. The nonprofit has collected thousands of books and opened its third library in Ghana this year.“It really just started out from a place of wanting to give back, and bui...La contraofensiva ucraniana ya está en marcha.

The U.S. secretary of State is finally headed to Beijing, but the “thaw” in relations predicted by the administration may be slow to follow.Antony Blinken is set to arrive in China this weekend for a series of meetings with senior officials including Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. A senior State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity told reporters to “stay tuned” regarding whether Blinken might meet with paramount leader Xi Jinping. The trip comes four months after Blinken’s initially planned visit was scuttled by the furor over a Chinese spy balloon found traversing the United States.Since then, the Biden administration has repeatedly expressed its desire to reschedule Blinken’s visit, outreach that Beijing has repeatedly rebuffed. The administration hopes this trip will be at least the first step toward an eventual summit between President Joe Biden and Xi.The administration describes Blinken’s trip as part of a longer-term ...Piecing together a deadly shipwreck, investigators face conflicting reports of Mediterranean journey

This much is clear: On June 9, an old steel fishing trawler left eastern Libya for Italy, carrying far too many people. As many as 750 men, women and children from Syria, Egypt, Palestine and Pakistan were on board, fleeing hopelessness in their home countries and trying to reach relatives in Europe.Five days later, the trawler sank off the coast of Greece in one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Only 104 people, all men, survived. The remains of 78 people were recovered. There are still more questions than answers about what led up to one of the worst shipwrecks in recent Mediterranean history.Activists, migration experts and opposition politicians have criticized Greek authorities for not acting earlier to rescue the migrants, even though a coast guard vessel escorted the trawler for hours and watched helplessly as it sank.Below is a timeline of events based on reports from Greek authorities, a commercial ship, and activists who said they were in touch with passengers. ...Daily horoscope for June 17, 2023
